Lessons from Four Years of Guest Teaching

If you had told me a year ago that I would spend my days navigating the vast span between kindergarten classrooms and high school lectures, I might have hesitated. Today, looking back at the close of this school year, I realize it has been the foundation of one of the most successful and rewarding chapters of my professional career. Stepping into a new classroom every day is the ultimate masterclass in adaptability. Thriving across diverse K-12 environments requires rapid assimilation, instructional flexibility, and a commitment to teaching. Three core strategies that defined my year include the following:

1. Prioritizing Student Rapport: Proactive engagement begins the moment students enter the classroom. My “First Impressions” framework centers on visual clarity and interpersonal connection—introducing myself, writing my name on the board, and welcoming each student. Rather than enforcing authority through rigid compliance, I establish essential behavioural norms by framing the day around shared values like mutual respect and kindness. Actively acknowledging these expectations creates a baseline for positive reinforcement, fostering the classroom synergy necessary for immediate academic productivity.

2. Maintaining Loyalty to Lesson Plan Execution: Preserving instructional continuity is vital, but it requires more than just passing out worksheets—it requires reading the energy of the room. My priority is always to ensure the scheduled curriculum is completed. However, when students show signs of frustration, I shift from supervisor to active instructional guide. Instead of enforcing rigid deadlines, I step in to offer practical suggestions that break complex tasks into smaller, manageable milestones. This empathetic approach to differentiation keeps students motivated while protecting the core learning objectives.

3. Building Proactive Partnerships with Administration: A successful day doesn’t end when the final bell rings; it concludes with thoughtful communication. At the end of every day, I leave notes for the regular teacher, especially if we had to navigate unexpected shifts or adapt a lesson on the fly. I love being able to share the good news that the lesson went well and that their students responded in a supportive, respectful manner. Before heading out, I stop by the front office to let the staff know the day went smoothly, and I make a point to connect with administrators if they are in the building.

As the summer break begins, I am grateful to the schools, staff, and students of RETSD who welcomed me into their classrooms this year. This journey has sharpened my educational expertise and proven the profound value of adaptable leadership in education. To my fellow educators, what was your biggest takeaway from this school year and how are you planning to recharge and reflect this summer? Let’s connect in the comments below!

Closing One Door, Opening Another: Our Downsizing Story

Downsizing was a pivotal moment in our journey. By letting go of the unnecessary and embracing a more intentional lifestyle, we discovered a newfound sense of freedom and happiness, all while staying in our beloved neighbourhood.

The last time we turned the crystal doorknob in our turn-of-the-century home, we paused a little longer than usual. It wasn’t just a house. It was where life happened—quiet summer mornings on the deck with birds chirping and squirrels scampering up trees, years marked by familiar routines—the mature trees in the yard, the perennial flower beds, the feeling that every corner held a memory. Leaving wasn’t easy. But sometimes, the next chapter asks something different of you.

The Moment We Knew

The idea of downsizing didn’t arrive all at once. It built gradually—in the time spent maintaining a home that no longer fit our day-to-day needs, in weekends filled with yard work and snow removal from the sloped roof, and in the quiet realization that we wanted more freedom. Not a different neighbourhood—we love where we live. We still wanted our favourite cafés, our go-to fitness centre, and the parks we walk through regularly. What we wanted was a different way of living within it.

Letting Go, Thoughtfully

Packing up years of life is both practical and emotional. Every item asked a question: Does this still serve us? Some things were easy to discard. Others carried stories, making the decision slower and more deliberate. Downsizing wasn’t about loss—it was about clarity. Keeping what truly mattered created space—not just physically, but mentally as well. What remained were the pieces that felt intentional—furniture and décor that fit both our new space and how we want to live now.

A Different Kind of Home

Walking into our new apartment for the first time felt lighter. The space is open and filled with natural light. Floor-to-ceiling windows, clean modern finishes, and thoughtful details make daily life feel simple and seamless. Our weekends unfold more slowly—coffee on the balcony or at a nearby cafe, a good book, watching the city from above. Time feels different here.

What Changed the Most

It turns out, downsizing isn’t really about space—it’s about intention. We didn’t just move into a new home. We moved into a lifestyle that gives us more time, less stress, and greater ease. The things we thought we might miss haven’t outweighed what we’ve gained. And perhaps most unexpectedly, staying in the same neighbourhood has made the transition feel like a continuation—not an ending.

Looking Back

If you had asked me before this move what downsizing meant, I might have said “less.” Now, I would say it means alignment. It’s choosing a place that reflects who you are today—not who you were when you first moved in. It’s letting go of what no longer fits to make room for what does. And sometimes, it’s as simple—and as profound—as closing one door and opening another.

A Final Thought

One of the most meaningful parts of this experience was having the right support along the way. Our realtor didn’t just help us sell our home—he guided us through every layer of the transition. From thoughtfully preparing and marketing the property to coordinating the sale of its contents to arranging for the remaining items to be donated and repurposed, the process felt seamless during what could have been an overwhelming time. It was a reminder that real estate, at its best, is about more than transactions—it’s about care, trust, and understanding the full scope of a life transition. If you’re considering a move—whether it’s downsizing or simply redefining your space—having the right guidance can make all the difference.

Easter Memories: Traditions That Stay With Us

Easter is about sharing good food, savouring some chocolate, enjoying time with loved ones, and holding on to the traditions that mean something to us. It’s a season that brings a sense of connection, warmth, and celebration.

Do you remember the excitement of getting a colourful Easter basket and gathering with family for a home-cooked roast beef, ham, turkey, or chicken with mashed potatoes, a medley of carrots, peas, and turnips, and lemon meringue pie? Oh, who could forget our Grandma’s homemade bread hot out of the oven and attending Easter church service in our new spring clothes? I still remember my Grandpa Murray waking up early for the Easter sunrise service. It’s one of those memories that’s never left me.

There’s something special about Easter time. Even when there’s still a bit of chill in the spring air, the smell of something baking in the kitchen makes everything feel warm and inviting. Kids rush around searching for chocolate eggs, and families sit down together for dinner or a brunch. It’s moments like these that tend to stick with us the most.

Traditions don’t have to be big to matter. Even the small ones bring people closer and remind us that Easter is about time spent together. In Prince Edward Island, for example, communities gather for the annual Easter Beef Show & Sale a few weeks before the holiday. It’s a long-standing event that brings people together while helping young Islanders learn more about where their food comes from.

Beyond the Podium: Stories of Courage, Heartbreak, and Hope from the 2026 Winter Olympics

The Olympic Games are about more than medals; they capture the spirit of resilience, respect, and shared humanity in moments that define champions.

The Olympic Games celebrate champions—but the moments that stay with us reach far beyond the medal podium. A rival’s embrace at the finish line, an athlete rising after disappointment, or the quiet grace shown when victory slips just out of reach—these are the moments that define the spirit of the Games. They remind us that the Olympics are not only about winning, but about resilience, respect, and the shared humanity that makes the competition unforgettable.

We watch for the medals, sure, but what stays with us are the moments of character. A skater pushing through pain. A hockey player helping a rival up after a tough loss. A cross-country skier smiling at the finish line despite exhaustion. These moments show the heart of the Games—and why they linger long after the flame goes out.

That spirit came alive at the opening ceremony when Kirsty Coventry spoke to the athletes. A seven-time Olympic medallist for Zimbabwe, Coventry reminded everyone that athletes show us what we can be at our best. Courage matters. Kindness matters. Respect matters—especially between rivals.

The 2026 Winter Olympics delivered joy, heartbreak, and inspiration over two unforgettable weeks. Canada’s silver-medal finish in both women’s and men’s hockey showed just how razor-thin the margins can be. One bounce, one play can change everything. The loss stung, but it also proved how fiercely competitive the team remains—and that coming close often fuels the next push for excellence.

Beyond the competition, the Games achieved something remarkable. Thousands of organizers and volunteers worked tirelessly behind the scenes, keeping races on time, venues running smoothly, and athletes ready to perform at their best. The closing ceremony honoured them—a simple but powerful reminder that the Olympics succeed because people work together.

The Olympic motto—Faster, Higher, Stronger – Together—shone across the stadium. It felt especially fitting this year. In a world that often feels divided, the Games still bring people together across borders, languages, and cultures. We watch for the medals, but we stay for the stories—of resilience, sacrifice, pressure, heartbreak, and pride. Early mornings, relentless training, and sheer determination that pushes through moments of doubt shape every athlete’s journey.

Behind every athlete stands a coach. Often unseen, they shape every performance. Coaches guide, challenge, and inspire, celebrate small victories, turn mistakes into lessons, and build the confidence that lets talent shine. That quiet moment when an athlete thinks, “I’ve got this,” comes from years of guidance, patience, and belief.

When the lights dim and the flame goes out, the real lesson remains. Excellence isn’t just about standing on the podium—it’s about showing up, pushing forward, and learning along the way. It’s about falling short sometimes and choosing to try again.

Maybe that’s the Olympic takeaway: keep pursuing better—together. Just like in the classroom, where teachers challenge their students not only to achieve, but to grow, stretch, and discover the best version of themselves.

Christmas Memories: Forever & Always

It’s starting to feel a lot like Christmas! Do you remember those unforgettable childhood Christmas adventures? Reciting lines in church pageants, singing joyfully in the school choir, and walking through glistening snow with your parents and siblings in search of the perfect, full-bodied Christmas tree? That’s my vivid PEI Christmas memory with mom, dad, and brother—full of wonder and excitement.

We would decorate the spruce tree with sparkling tinsel, handmade paper chains, and treasured family ornaments reflecting cozy, magical moments. Stockings were the best part, and there was always one or two special gifts for each of us. Such simple joys. I cherish those family moments and the excitement of those Christmases, primarily stringing up the Christmas cards we once received in the mail in our grandma’s kitchen.

So, Christmas happens every year for my husband and me, decorating our place, attending get-togethers with friends and family, and most of all, reminiscing about memories from long ago. I love seeing our little tree lit up at night and listening to Christmas carols while wrapping those special gifts. Do you have a Christmas tradition? Do you keep your decorations the same every year?  Do you buy one new ornament a year?

We’ve added a few ornaments this year, carefully placing our favourite decorations—such as handcrafted wooden and felt figures throughout our home. This memorable decorating effort has been beautifully completed and deeply treasured.

Commitment, Confidence, and Courage: Unlocking A Workout Mindset

Commitment, confidence, and courage are the key drivers of a winning workout mindset. A resilient attitude, strengthened by unwavering dedication and consistent effort, can dramatically boost your physical progress and personal growth. Sometimes, small acts—like a quick 15-minute walk around your neighbourhood—can spark momentum and motivation, especially when paired with clear, achievable goals such as increasing daily steps or walk time.

Confidence builds naturally through patience, discipline, and past successes, fueling pride and mental clarity. Courage, exemplified by Paulo Coelho’s transformative Camino journey, is characterized by resilience in overcoming challenges and setbacks. Regular walking not only refreshes your mind and spirit but also improves heart health, strengthens leg muscles, and boosts your sense of self-efficacy through tangible progress. Moving, mainly walking, often sparks creativity and clarity, acting as a form of meditation that clears mental clutter.

Establishing daily routines centred on physical activity, mindfulness, and self-reflection enhances overall health, elevates confidence, and nurtures authenticity. Every day offers new growth opportunities, created through deliberate actions, resilience, and mindful practices. Reflect on small daily habits, such as conscious breathing during walks or setting achievable goals, that can boost your confidence and deepen your self-awareness. What’s one small daily practice that helps you feel more confident and connected to yourself?

Golden sunsets, warm evening, and unforgettable adventures defined my summer of 2025

Have you ever stopped to truly appreciate the moments that leave a lasting mark on your heart, long after the sun has set? Get ready for an exhilarating journey through some of the most unforgettable summer adventures!

One of my absolute favourite things is watching sunsets—it’s like the sky puts on a breathtaking fireworks show, swirling with vivid colours in that magical twilight. Taking a moment to soak in this natural spectacle fills me with peace and gratitude, reminding me to stay in the present moment.

This summer, a trip to PEI to visit my mom ignited a treasure chest of unforgettable memories. We explored charming local cafés, indulging in mouthwatering lobster rolls and juicy mussels. As summer gracefully gives way to fall, there’s nothing more exciting than sharing a picnic—laughter, delicious food, and warm conversations about future escapades. These joyful moments become lifelong treasures, etched in our hearts.

One unforgettable September evening, we discovered pure happiness while dining at our favourite cozy restaurant in the neighbourhood. Autumn’s crisp breeze invited us to savour the outdoors before the chill set in. The terrace at Pizzeria Gusto became our little sanctuary—warm, inviting, and full of charm. We relished their legendary Don pizza—an incredible combination of rich tomato sauce and fresh toppings—paired with a glass of wine and their signature pasta. Watching the sunset sky blush with hues while sharing these delightful treats made the experience truly magical, especially surrounded by loved ones.

Join me in celebrating these incredible moments that turn an ordinary summer into an extraordinary adventure!

The Journey Surpasses the Destination

Starting a journey is often more fulfilling than just reaching the end. It’s important to understand that the value of an ending lessens if you don’t gain knowledge and insights along the way. Every long journey begins with a single step, as shown by my gradual increase in walking distance until I made a routine of walking two miles every day. In the summer of 2025, my journey of over 500 miles began with that first step. Choosing comfortable footwear that fits well is essential for distance walking. I enjoy exploring scenic routes such as neighbourhood sidewalks and streets. Finding inspiring spots and switching routes can turn exercise into a fun adventure. Usually, I focus on noticing the small details of street life rather than chasing after specific destinations.

An early morning walk invigorates my body by increasing circulation, sparking my productivity through mental refreshment. Living in a community that encourages active living—featuring accessible parks and walking paths—makes it easy to give myself an energy boost after consuming my morning caffeine. Whether I am taking a quick break between tasks, a brisk walk along scenic routes or shaded sidewalks can significantly enhance my overall well-being and help me maintain high energy levels throughout the day. I believe in movement. Sometimes, a short walk is all that is needed to do something great for your body. I advise anyone to start slow, do it, and be consistent!

Unlocking Success: An Experienced Educator Shares Must-Have Resources and Insights for Aspiring Teachers!

Reflections by the window_2025

As I conclude my third year as a practicum advisor, I’ve observed a wonderful trend among educators: their passion for teaching and learning. This enthusiasm is vital, enabling them to tackle daily challenges and create the best experiences for their students. The energy they bring to their classrooms makes a significant impact!

Fostering a passion for teaching and learning is paramount. The bond between teachers and students should be a mutually enriching experience. Mentor teachers play a vital role in sharing knowledge, encouraging student engagement, and meeting diverse learning needs. At the same time, students must take charge of their educational journeys, with teachers acting as inspiring motivators who equip them with the essential skills for independent learning. Every school’s mission is to cultivate an academic environment where every student is valued and supported—a vital goal for today’s classroom landscape.

Encouraging critical thinking and independent thought is vital in our fast-paced world. Educators create an engaging learning environment that helps students analyze, evaluate, and synthesize information by integrating diverse technologies and resources. This approach cultivates the skills and knowledge they need to navigate future challenges confidently.

My educational philosophy focuses on building strong relationships and meaningful engagement between novice and mentor teachers. I believe fostering a collaborative environment is crucial for professional growth, where experienced educators can share valuable resources and insights. By discussing effective teaching techniques and exchanging experiences, we enhance our teaching practices and inspire continuous learning, ultimately providing our students with a more dynamic educational experience.

One of the most rewarding experiences for educators is witnessing a student suddenly grasp a challenging concept or the joy that lights up their face when they conquer a difficult learning obstacle. These moments of clarity and triumph signify academic progress and reflect a deepening understanding of the material. Additionally, observing significant improvements in student behaviour and motivation from one term to the next is a powerful source of inspiration for teachers. It highlights the impact of consistent encouragement, tailored instruction, and cultivating a positive learning environment. Each small victory reinforces the belief that every student has the potential to succeed, further fueling an educator’s passion for teaching and commitment to fostering a love for learning.

As I think about the priority goals set by my school division, I encourage my teacher candidates to join me in this reflection. Three core objectives stand out: First, how can we, as educators, elevate student achievement through dynamic and engaging literacy instruction? It’s crucial to ignite our students’ passion for reading and writing. Second, we must ask ourselves: How can we implement a dynamic and practical curriculum catering to all learners’ diverse needs? It includes integrating meaningful texts and materials reflecting our students’ rich cultures and experiences. Lastly, let’s explore the myriad instructional strategies we can use to engage our students in their learning journeys actively.

As educators, our commitment goes beyond teaching; it’s about crafting an inclusive and supportive environment where every student can truly shine. Imagine a school buzzing with collaboration—educators, families, and community members joining forces to foster a culture of inclusivity that enriches every student’s experience.

We don’t just acknowledge the rich tapestry of backgrounds and abilities among our students; we celebrate them! Engaging parents and community members as partners in this journey is essential. By fostering open communication and mutual respect, we create a vibrant learning atmosphere where everyone feels valued and empowered.

Together, we can make a significant and lasting impact on the lives of our students and the community around us. Let’s embrace this opportunity to transform our educational landscape and ensure everyone thrives!

My experiences as an educator have profoundly shaped my commitment to the teaching profession. Each interaction with my students and each lesson I craft reinforces my belief that continuous improvement is essential in this role. As I actively seek to enhance my skills, I recognize that embracing digital technologies is beneficial and necessary for creating an engaging and richly diverse classroom environment.

Using technology in education changes traditional teaching methods in our fast-moving digital world. It helps teachers use multimedia resources, interactive platforms, and personalized learning experiences that fit different learning styles and paces. This change boosts our passion for teaching and provides new opportunities for creativity and teamwork among teachers and students. By using technology, we make education richer, more accessible, and more engaging for all students.

As the school year comes to a close, we must take a moment to reflect and recognize the many accomplishments we have to celebrate together.
